Idea recruiting, Thought leaders, and pixy dust…

Remember when execution was the focal point of every idea? Well, in today’s environment it seems people are more entranced by “the idea” instead of focusing on the hardest and most important aspect of the process, execution.

During the DotCom BOOM new companies and technologies came out of the woodwork, with most going away just as fast as they surfaced. What was the problem? Well, in most cases it was poor execution, it certainly wasn’t the flowery white boarded idea. The idea is what sold the VC on spending the cash in the first place, but it was the lack of solid execution that killed the idea.

So, what is an idea worth? My answer, without the element of execution an idea is worth nothing but a big bloated sack of Whizzzz Bang.

Why the idea resurgence?

I don’t believe there is a resurgence; it’s just easier to share your ideas in today’s connected environment. For instance blogging has allowed people, like me, to more freely share these ideas with a community of hundreds or thousands daily. Unfortunately I’m hearing more fluff than I am blood, sweat, and tears of execution.

Even people who know the industry can find their heads in the clouds at times.

One day, your entire life may be digitized.” - Dave Lefkow

Personally I hope I’m long gone before the days of hooking our young into Matrix-like pods become status quo.

Ideas are the commerce of the 21st Century.” - Joel Cheesman

Joel’s one of the only guys I know who believes sitting in a bean bag chair naked eating Cheetos while conjuring up ideas should be billable.

I don’t want to kill the steady flow of ideas, I have a head full of them myself, although I would ask bloggers and pundits to focus more on realistic execution, instead of just the easy whizz bang fluff.

George Santayana once said “Those Who Forget History Are Doomed to Repeat It“, so remember the days of the DotCom BOOM and complete your ideas with great execution, not pixy dust.

Wikipedia gets the Google JUICE!

2 + 2 = SEO

The following comScore(2) and(+) Hitwise(2) data shows how Search Engine Optimization(=SEO) can help YOUR organiziation’s site traffic tremendously.

In December, comScore reported WikiPedia entering Top 10 in traffic.

Where is all of Wikipedia’s traffic coming from?!?

- Click here for full-size Hitwise chart -

If it seems like Google is sending more traffic to Wikipedia than in the past, it’s because it is. The percentage of Google’s downstream traffic going to Wikipedia increased by 166% year over year (week ending 2/10/07 vs. week ending 2/11/06).” - Leann Prescott

As you can see from the Hitwise chart above, search engines are supplying around 70% of Wikipedia’s traffic, 50% from Google alone.

Again, 2 + 2 = SEO

Hat tip.

FARCE THIS!

The FARCE wrote this about me on Friday:

“Pretty soon I’m going to be saying that Chad Sowash is not bald, he’s just disadvantaged (Like a burn victim? or POWDER)” - the FARCE

This statement portrays me as “follicley challenged“, not a bad thing, although my impaired follicle-ness, is that a word?, is a choice not a condition. My beautiful wife of 7 years is a fan of shaved heads, ever since seeing The King and I, and as proof of my follicle superiority I would like to introduce Exhibit A…

“EXHIBIT A”
Chad's follicle Superiority!
Take that FARCE!

Resume Databases, maximize your investment

I believe in new technologies and the idea of web 2.0, although I have a firm belief of maximizing what web 1.0 provides before moving swiftly into the future.

The problem
Hiring companies buy job board resume database access for their recruiter(s) without getting the biggest bang for their buck every stinkin’ year. What do I mean?

Here’s an example/comparison
Company A buys a 500 job pack and manages the job pack to ensure every job is used within the specified time frame, due to the “use or lose” policy established by most job boards.

Company A also buys one resume database license for one year, which equals 20,000 resumes max per year, but only uses 5,000 resumes total. Why doesn’t this company leverage the talent they’ve purchased? More importantly, why isn’t this company ensuring all viewed resumes are downloaded into the corporate database, ATS or CRM? The “use or lose” policy is in effect for this investment also, meaning you’ve just lost 15,000 candidates.

Again, The problem
Companies spend hundreds of thousands of dollars a year without managing their resume database investment, only to continue spending more cash for candidate information they should already own.

The real world
In January Monster lowered their maximum resume views from 60,000 to 20,000 per year, without much employer angst. Why? Employers are not managing their current purchase and do not understand the opportunity to build their very own world-class talent network. Most resume database licenses do not even exceed the 10,000 views per year mark. I am using Monster as an example because Careerbuilder allows over 100,000 resumes max per license, per year. So, if companies are not maximizing their Monster investment, how well do you think they are maximizing their other database investments? Get the point?

The opportunity
Companies who have purchased these candidate databases have the opportunity to bulk up their ATS or CRM database by the amount of tens of thousands of candidates per license, per year. Using tools like, TalentHook or AIRS MyREVO will facilitate the transfer process while ensuring you are not duplicating resumes already in your corporate database.

In closing
Smart companies are learning how to create their own very world-class talent network by directing candidate flow to their corporate career site and smartly using vendors to build a world-class candidate database, infusing email marketing programs, corporate social networks, and CRM.

Leverage your investment!
Build your talent network!
Recruit Smart!
