Indeed surpasses Monster

During the show last week I mentioned that Indeed supplies the big boards with enormous amounts of traffic. Using Hitwise I noticed Indeed is the #4 traffic provider for Careerbuilder and HotJobs, while this week moved from #9 to the #8 traffic provider for Monster.

Amazing yes.. but there’s more…

I have also noticed Indeed’s traffic numbers have surpassed Monster!?! It’s no surprise that Indeed is still on the rise, although it’s Monster’s plummet that has me scratching my head. Why would a company who has predicated their business model on job seeker traffic let it die on the vine? Also, since it is speculated that Monster is looking to be sold… How does this help their “perspective” auction block efforts?

The real question is…

Where is Indeed getting all of this traffic? According to Hitwise over 30% comes from search with the bulk (22%+) supplied by Google..

Smart SEO and I would venture to say even smarter SEM are the big factors, and whether you’re a fan of how Indeed is garnering traffic or not, it’s working.

What’s the breakdown by the numbers? At what month did Indeed surpass Monster?

    Thanks Eric… Yes, Hitwise rocks!

Indeed and Monster have been fighting for 4th position since Nov of last year.

    More to come…

While I can certainly appreciate the thought behind this commentary … it overlooks a very important point. Namely, that Indeed is not a competitor to Monster or any of the other job boards. In fact, Careerbuilder, Hojobs and Monster postings are a catalyst for Indeed traffic and vice-versa.

Indeed isn’t a “job board” in the traditional sense, but rather a job board aggregator. The two are complimentary rather than adversarial, so it would be a stretch to find anything meaningful by comparing their traffic.

Also, Monster’s business model has never been as predicated on job seeker traffic as it has on simply building it’s brand name, which they have been successful doing. But in terms of sheer traffic numbers, they have been behind their competitors for quite some time now.

    Thanks for the comment Keith…

You and your buddies at CareerBuilder should sit back, feel safe, & find your happy place… There\’s obviously nothing in the industry that can bring Careerbuilder to its knees…

Well… unless you believe search is the next step in the evolutionary process of our industry. If so, then there are real problems ahead for the traditional job board model.

Complimentary and not adversarial… I cannot even fathom addressing this in a comment; it\’s another post in itself…

Monster\’s business model has always been predicated on job seeker traffic, which equates into more resumes, bigger database and fantastic revenues. That\’s Job Board 101 stuff man; didn\’t they teach you that in Careerbuilder orientation?

Not sure if I understood what’s written here? Indeed has more traffic than monster?
in like 4 million uniques is greater than 18 million or so for monster?
Or did you mean something else?

Monster’s traffic can be broken down further than the 18-25 million monthly unique visitors that they regularly report.

That 18-25 million is a total number of visitors from all of Monster’s properties…which include Military.com and Tickle.com to name a few.

Once you remove the properties, you are left with just the site traffic for Monster.com. When you compare those monthly unique visitors to those of Indeed.com, you will see that they are not too far off. Maybe Indeed has even overtaken them as is being reported from Hitwise.
