A Proactive Recruiting Partner

A case study provided by Penske Truck Leasing

As a newly hired manager of staffing for a well-established company, I was tasked to centralize corporate recruiting responsibilities on a very tight budget, limited staff, and with outdated technology. In 2008 my primary objective was very simple; streamline advertising for internet and print to increase exposure of opportunities, reduce advertising costs, and utilize the savings to fund future projects of HR technology upgrades and a centralized recruiting model. After some brief research I uncovered a great resource with the DirectEmployers Association to assist with my primary objective.

Penske’s partnership with the DirectEmployers Association was initially considered because of the job aggregator ability to push a job opening out to numerous free sites. Specifically, veteran and diversity sites to assist our organization in compliance towards job visibility for OFCCP purposes. The full scope of job visibility and services provided by DirectEmployers Association was not clear until I had the opportunity to have some discussions with a representative. Without a doubt, it was clear that the partnership with DirectEmployers Association was going to be well worth the investment.

In 2008, we have successfully watched our applicant flow increase at three times the rate of the prior years. Unfortunately, our current applicant tracking system does not allow us to specifically identify which applicants are reaching us due to the partnership with DirectEmployers Association. What can confirm is that in 2008 we have posted sixty percent less with the “big” internet job board and reduced our print advertising by over fifty percent. Our career site, applicants tracking systems, and additional recruiting marketing strategies have not changed in 2008 – so one could only assume that the additional visibility provided by DirectEmployers Association has been extremely influential in our applicant flow.

While I could speak further on how DirectEmployers Association has improved my applicant flow with industry leading processes and technologies, there are several other key services they proactively provide which have addressed our business needs. The first is their partnerships and relationships with various government agencies and vendors – this has saved me hours of research time and/or costs I would have normally incurred with consultants to assist in providing me the summaries of federal compliance changes. The second would be their member surveys – these have also saved me research time and provided a great starting point on topics such as software technology, policy and procedure development, and recruiting methods. Finally, the ability to network with individuals in similar roles as myself – this opportunity has forged some strong business relationships and has allowed for some great, progressive conversations to occur. Each of these three items has been critical in allowing me to be successful with my future objectives.

I certainly support the goals and objectives of the DirectEmployers Association and recommend them to any company that is looking to stay a “step ahead” in the recruiting market.
