Program aims to help vets get good jobs

Sgt. 1st Class Chad Sowash never stops working for soldiers.

The Indiana Reserve senior drill sergeant is in his second mobilization at Fort Benning, Ga., in four years.

When Sowash isn’t shaping civilians into soldiers, he spends his time finding job opportunities for veterans in the nation’s top-rated firms. (All companies)

About 18 months ago, Sowash launched VetCentral, an Internet-based program designed to help veterans find success in the civilian workforce. (DirectEmployers Associatrion launched VetCentral, I’m leading the program)

“It focuses on connecting Fortune 500 companies with veterans,” said Sowash, vice president for business development for Direct Employers Association, a nonprofit group that works with major corporations to help them recruit more effectively. “The jobs have always been there, but there has never been a pipeline in place to funnel those jobs to the veterans.”

Chad gets some NBC Nightly News

Wednesday, December 31st, 2008

Earlier this month I had the pleasure of being interviewed by Ron Mott, Terry Pickard and Dwayne the cool camera guy (from NBC) while showing them around Fort Benning, GA. They were able to film an extensive physical training (PT) session and even made it to the AT4 range where they fired training rounds and witnessed 6 live anti-tank rockets slam into tanks downrange. I always try to show guests a good time when they visit ;o)

Chad gets some NPR (National Public Radio)

Monday, December 29th, 2008

It was the day after Christmas and I found myself in front of a microphone, wearing headphones and fighting the normal pre-interview butterflies at the brand new WFYI studios, just outside of downtown Indy. Then through the headphones I hear the voice of NPR‘s Weekend Edition Sunday host, Liane Hansen and was unusually right at ease. Liane, who has hosted the show nearly 20 years, was a stranger although has an innate ability to make you feel comfortable allowing the words to flow. A perfect characteristic for a journalist wouldn’t you say? Thanks to Liane and NPR for recognizing the importance of what we, as a group, are doing to create a true National Labor Exchange which includes serving our veterans.
